Blog 1301: Things We Learned At The Berlin Music Video Awards

Ray Mann at Berlin Music Video Awards

Last week, the inaugural Berlin Music Video Awards were held in, funnily enough, Berlin. The Ray Mann Three’s music video ‘Sometimes’ was nominated in the Best Stop Motion / Animation category, and screened alongside the other finalists (among them: Justice, Alt-J, Modeselektor feat. Thom Yorke, Sigur Rós, Michael Nyman and Sébastien Tellier). While our video didn’t win, we did get to hang out and watch a lot of other people’s music videos, over hours and hours. Here are some of our mental notes…

Things We Learned At The Berlin Music Video Awards

Story is everything:

.

Effects are often best when they’re easy to miss:

.

An amazing animation elevated ‘Whatsapper’ from clever to genius:

.

Split-screen can still look cool:

.

Title cards with live action backgrounds look cool:

.

Stock images of landscapes turned duotone and upside-down look cool:

.

And finally: there are a lot of talented people making amazing things you will never see:

.

Congrats to all the winners – and thank YOU for voting x

Sketches: ‘Sometimes’ 3.0 [Video]

Q. ‘What’s one thing you could hit somebody with?’

Thanks to everyone who hit me for this month’s Sketches music video – your responses were great, I had plenty to work with. I’m a little afraid to perform this one live now…

You can also check out the process on the ‘Sometimes’ song page.

Next Sketch begins next month – hope you’ll Sketch With Us.
