Sometime between the end of the Second World War (1939-1945) and dawn of the G-Funk Era (1994-2000), the invention of the tape recorder allowed European composers, for the first time in history, to put a thang down, flip it and reverse it. And yet, in the half century that followed, not one of them managed to create anything even remotely as much fun to listen to as The Wu-Tang Clan’s ‘Gravel Pit’. What was their goddamned problem? In ‘The Low End Theory’, author and broadcaster Craig Schuftan presents a short history of loops and samples, featuring music by Missy Elliott, Grandmaster Flash, MIA, RZA, Roxanne Shante, Jay-Z, and four important European composers who totally failed to invent hip hop. After that, DJs Zimt and Ray Mann put theory into practice, with a selection of jams carefully chosen for their radical and transformative use of sound recording technology and / or ability to move yo ass.
